Beinn a' Mheadhoin

The climb up Beinn a' Mheadhoin demands respect. This 2,936-foot peak on the Isle of Mull isn't a casual stroll - it's a proper hill walk that rewards effort with views across the Inner Hebrides that'll stop you in your tracks.

You're looking at a solid four to five hours round trip, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path winds through moorland before steepening considerably in the final push to the summit. On a clear day - and you'll want one - you can see Ben Nevis to the east and the Treshnish Islands directly below. Cloudy weather? The walk becomes markedly less rewarding, so check the forecast before committing.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with young children will struggle; teenagers who actually walk regularly might manage it. The payoff is genuine solitude and landscape that feels genuinely remote, even by Hebridean standards. There's no visitor centre, no admission fee, no crowds - just you, the mountain, and whatever weather the Atlantic decides to throw at you.

If you're based at Port nan Gael Campsite or Island Pods, both just five or six miles away near Tobermory, this makes a natural day trip. Build in extra time for wind - exposure on the upper slopes can be fierce. Start early, bring more water than you think you'll need, and wear proper boots. The mountain doesn't care how well-equipped you are, but it'll certainly punish you if you're not.
