Beinn Chreagach Mhòr

You're looking at a proper mountain walk on the Isle of Mull, and Beinn Chreagach Mhòr isn't for idle wanderers. The peak stands at 679 metres, which doesn't sound enormous until you're actually climbing it and the weather turns on you halfway up.

The ascent takes most people three to four hours return, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The views across the Sound of Mull toward Ben More are genuinely exceptional - the kind that make your legs forget they're burning. On a clear day you'll see all the way to Ardnamurchan.

It's a walker's walk, this one. Not a casual stroll where you pop up for a photo and head back to the car park. You'll want proper boots, a map, and weather-appropriate kit because conditions change fast out here. The route climbs through moorland and then bare rock, so there's no shelter to speak of once you're above the tree line.

Families with older kids who've done hill walks before will manage it fine. Younger children or anyone after an easy afternoon would be better off exploring the coast near Tobermory instead. It's free, obviously - just park up and go. The nearest accommodation is Island Pods, about five and a half miles away on Mull, which offers proper glamping if you want comfort after a hard day in the hills.

Best visited in summer when daylight stretches. Winter ascents are serious business.
