Beinn a' Ghraig

Beinn a' Ghraig rises 793 metres above the Isle of Mull, offering one of those walks where the effort pays back in spades. The peak itself isn't technically difficult - more a persistent slog than a scramble - but the views across to Ben More and down to the Sound of Mull make it genuinely worthwhile.

Most walkers start from near Loch ba, working their way up through moorland that can be boggy in places (proper squelchy after rain). The final push to the summit takes about four hours there and back for someone of moderate fitness, though you could do it quicker if you're used to Scottish hills. There's no maintained path to speak of, so navigation skills help, especially if cloud rolls in.

This is a peak for people who actually enjoy walking rather than just ticking boxes. Families with young kids won't manage it easily; older teenagers who've done a few hills already would find it achievable. Photographers should come in clear weather - the cloud cover that rolled in during my visit ruined the panorama completely.

Free, obviously. No facilities at the base, so take water and something to eat. Allow a full day if you're not rushed.

Staying at Island Pods just 1.2 miles away makes this a logical addition to a park holiday on Mull. You could pair it with a walk around Ben More if you're feeling ambitious, or use it as your main event and spend other days exploring the island's lower-level trails.
