Holmfirth

Anyone who's watched Last of the Summer Wine will recognise this Yorkshire stone town instantly. The cobbled streets and mill terraces that made Compo and Nora Batty household names haven't changed much since the cameras stopped rolling, and frankly that's exactly how locals like it. Holmfirth wears its TV fame lightly - yes, you'll spot Compo's house and Nora Batty's house on the main drag, but there's much more substance beneath the sitcom surface.

The real draw here is the surrounding Pennine landscape. Wolfstones and Burned Hill offer proper fell walking with cracking views across the Holme Valley, while gentler souls can potter around Digley Reservoir or Bilberry Reservoir on well-marked paths. Binns Wood and Malkin House Wood provide decent woodland walks when the weather's being typically Yorkshire.

For a town this size, the food and drink scene punches well above its weight. Three Fiends brewery has carved out quite a reputation among beer enthusiasts, and Zapato Brewing keeps the local ale tradition alive. The weekly market still draws crowds from surrounding villages - proper Yorkshire folk who know good produce when they see it.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Holmfirth sits just off the A6024, about 15 minutes south of Huddersfield. The bus service from Huddersfield runs regularly, though having your own wheels gives you freedom to explore those reservoir walks and moorland paths.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring both the town and the wider Pennines. You're within striking distance of the Peak District's northern edges, yet close enough to nip into Holmfirth for supplies or a pint. The local camping scene caters well to walkers and cyclists who appreciate proper Yorkshire hospitality without the tourist traps.
