Ancient textile mills and Victorian workers' terraces line the steep valley sides where the River Calder cuts through the Pennine foothills. Elland sits at the heart of West Yorkshire's industrial heritage, a proper mill town that's found new life without losing its character. The stone-built centre feels authentically Yorkshire - no gentrification here, just honest local shops and the odd excellent pub.

Wainhouse Tower dominates the skyline, that peculiar 253-foot folly that looks like someone crossed a lighthouse with a factory chimney. Built by a dye works owner in the 1870s, it's one of Yorkshire's oddest landmarks and worth the climb for cracking views across the Calder Valley. Down in the town centre, the Victorian railway architecture at Elland station reminds you this was once a crucial stop on the Manchester-Leeds line.

The surrounding countryside opens up quickly once you escape the valley bottom. Moorland stretches in all directions, perfect walking country with dry stone walls threading across the hills. Halifax sits just three miles north if you need proper shops or a night out, while the M62 makes Manchester and Leeds both reachable within the hour.

Basing yourself at one of the local caravan parks makes perfect sense for exploring this bit of West Yorkshire. Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park sits right on the doorstep, while several others dot the valley sides nearby. You're well placed for day trips to the Brontë country around Haworth, or for tackling some of the excellent Pennine Way sections that pass close by. The town itself might not detain you long, but it's an ideal launch pad for discovering what makes this corner of Yorkshire so compelling.
