Otley

Two words define Otley's appeal: proper gritstone. This West Yorkshire market town sits in a dramatic bowl of millstone grit peaks that provide some of the finest rock climbing in the north. Almscliffe Crag draws climbers from across Britain to tackle its weathered faces, while walkers can bag multiple summits like Chapel Hill and Wescoe Hill without breaking much sweat.

The town itself has character beyond the climbing scene. Market days still draw crowds to the cobbled square, and the pubs know how to pour a decent pint after a day on the moors. It's proper Yorkshire - none of the theme park nonsense you get in some Dales towns.

Bramhope Tunnel, an engineering marvel from the railway age, cuts through the landscape just south of town. The surrounding countryside rolls between wooded valleys and open moorland, with the Wharfe Valley particularly lovely for riverside walks. Pool-in-Wharfedale sits nearby, a village that wears its prosperity lightly.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Weeton station connects to Leeds in under half an hour, while the A660 brings drivers straight from the city. Leeds Bradford Airport sits 15 minutes away.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like St Helena's or Moor Valley makes perfect sense. You're close enough to Leeds for cultural fixes but far enough out to wake up to proper countryside views. The surrounding peaks of Gravelly Hill and Stanistan Hill provide endless walking, and you'll have the climbing crags practically on your doorstep. It's an ideal spot for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales' southern fringes and the surprisingly wild country that sits almost within touching distance of Britain's third-largest city.
