Last of the Summer Wine fans will know exactly why this modest terraced house draws visitors to Holmfirth. The home of Compo Simmonite - the scruffy, ferret-obsessed character who spent decades chasing Nora Batty up and down these Yorkshire hills - sits on a typical residential street that's become an unlikely pilgrimage site.

You can't go inside, of course. This is someone's actual home, not a museum. But devotees of the long-running BBC comedy still turn up to snap photos outside the front door where Bill Owen's character lived his gloriously chaotic existence. The house itself is unremarkable - standard Yorkshire stone, net curtains, nothing fancy. That's rather the point.

Be respectful when you visit. The current residents have been remarkably tolerant of Summer Wine tourists over the years, but it's still a private residence. A quick photo and move on is the done thing.

Families staying at nearby sites like Secret Valley Escapes or Holme Valley Camping will find this works well as part of a Holmfirth walking tour. The town centre is just a few minutes away, and you can easily combine it with other filming locations scattered around the area. Kids might not get the reference, but parents of a certain age will appreciate the nostalgia trip. Allow five minutes max - there's not much else to see here beyond the front door that launched a thousand pratfalls.
