Cathedral bells ring out across the Red Sandstone city where ancient meets agricultural in the most unassuming way. Hereford sits comfortably in its river valley, a proper market town that's never tried too hard to impress visitors - and that's precisely its charm.

The magnificent cathedral dominates the centre, housing the medieval Mappa Mundi and chained library that most tourists dash through without truly appreciating. But locals know the real treasures lie in wandering the quiet streets around it. St Paul's Church offers a peaceful alternative to the cathedral crowds, while Hampton Park Church sits in leafy surroundings perfect for a contemplative moment.

Climb Dinedor Hill for the best views across the Wye Valley - it's a bit of a trek but the panorama over the patchwork fields is cracking. The countryside here is gloriously agricultural, with apple orchards stretching toward the Welsh borders and cattle grazing in fields that seem to go on forever. Brick Kiln Wood and Young Oaks Wood provide lovely walking routes when you need to escape the town centre's modest bustle.

For something completely different, Green Spider Climbing offers an indoor challenge, while history buffs should seek out Rotherwas Chapel and the grand Holme Lacy House, both testament to the area's wealthy past.

Rail connections from Birmingham and Newport make Hereford surprisingly accessible, though most visitors arrive by car via the A49. The town works brilliantly as a base for exploring the Wye Valley and Black Mountains. Staying at one of the nearby campsites or glamping spots means you can properly explore this understated corner of the Marches without the rush of a day trip.
