Mordiford Dragon Trail

The Mordiford Dragon Trail takes you through the village of Mordiford, just outside Hereford, following a local legend that's genuinely gripped people for centuries. A dragon supposedly terrorised the area until a knight - or depending on which version you believe, a local lad - managed to kill it. You'll spot dragon-themed artwork and markers dotted around the village as you walk the route, which winds past the medieval church and along the riverside.

It's a proper walk rather than a quick tourist tick-box. Most people allow a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing. The trail works brilliantly for families with kids old enough to enjoy a bit of storytelling and exploration - younger children might lose interest unless you're really playing up the dragon narrative. History buffs will appreciate the genuine mediaeval backdrop and the way local folklore has survived in the landscape.

The walk is free, naturally, and the river views are genuinely lovely. You'll pass Mordiford Bridge, which has its own character. The trail suits a caravan-based holiday perfectly. Lucksall Caravan & Camping Park sits less than a mile away, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing alongside exploring Hereford itself. Combine it with a visit to nearby Caplor Glamping or Ridge Hill if you're after something slightly more upmarket.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are ideal - you'll avoid summer crowds and have better light for photographs. Don't expect grand signage or visitor facilities; this is the real thing, not a polished attraction.
