Fownhope Park

Ancient woodland stretches across the hills just outside Hereford, where centuries-old oaks and beech trees create a proper cathedral of green. Fownhope Park isn't your manicured country park - this is wild Herefordshire forest at its most authentic, with muddy tracks that wind through dense canopy and clearings that suddenly open to reveal the Wye Valley beyond.

Walkers will find themselves spoilt here. The terrain varies from gentle slopes perfect for families to steeper climbs that'll get your heart pumping. Keep an eye out for the wildlife - red kites circle overhead while deer pick their way through the undergrowth. The kids might spot woodpeckers hammering away at dead wood, though they'll need to stay quiet for that.

Bring proper walking boots because the paths can get boggy, especially after rain. Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend half a day here if the weather's decent. The forest works brilliantly as a morning adventure when staying at nearby spots like Lucksall Caravan & Camping Park or Caplor Glamping & Lodges - both are under two miles away.

History buffs should look out for remnants of old boundary markers and ancient earthworks scattered through the trees. It's free to explore, which makes it even better value than most Herefordshire attractions.
