Haugh Wood Butterfly Trail

Haugh Wood's butterfly trail is a gentle woodland walk that rewards you with sightings of peacocks, commas, and the occasional red admiral if you time it right. It's proper woodland rambling rather than a manicured nature reserve - think uneven paths, dappled light filtering through mature trees, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong.

The trail loops through mixed woodland just outside Hereford, taking about an hour at a comfortable pace. You don't need to be a lepidopterist to enjoy it, though having a decent field guide tucked in your rucksack helps. Late spring through early autumn works best for spotting; summer holidays mean the kids won't be bored waiting for butterflies to emerge. The woodland floor in May and June is thick with bluebells and wild garlic, which is worth the visit alone.

It's free to walk and there's no visitor centre nonsense - just you, the trees, and whatever winged creatures are about. Don't expect facilities. Bring water and wear proper shoes because the ground gets boggy in places.

For a camping holiday, it sits handily close to Lucksall Caravan & Camping Park and Caplor Glamping, both within walking distance of Hereford's city centre. Pair it with a morning here and an afternoon exploring Ross-on-Wye or the Forest of Dean, and you've got a solid day. Not a blockbuster attraction, but genuinely lovely if you want a proper walk without the tourist crowds.
