Nover Wood

Dense canopy filters the light into dappled patterns across the woodland floor at Nover Wood, a proper patch of ancient forest just outside Hereford. This isn't manicured parkland - expect muddy boots and the occasional bramble scratch as you follow the informal paths that wind through oak, ash and birch.

Families with older children will get the most from a visit here. Toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain, but adventurous kids love scrambling over fallen logs and building dens among the trees. Dog walkers have claimed this place as their own, so expect plenty of four-legged company.

The woods feel genuinely wild compared to the more sanitised country parks in the area. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards - just you and the trees. Allow a good hour for a proper wander, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type who enjoys spotting wildlife or identifying different species.

Being so close to several holiday parks makes Nover Wood an easy addition to a Herefordshire break. Lucksall Caravan & Camping Park and Caplor Glamping & Lodges are both within walking distance if you fancy stretching your legs after setting up camp. The lack of facilities means it's free to explore, though you'll want waterproofs if there's been recent rain - the paths can turn properly boggy.
