Holme Lacy House

The moment you turn down the drive to Holme Lacy House, you're in proper countryside - rolling Herefordshire farmland with the house suddenly emerging, all red sandstone and mullioned windows. It's a handsome Jacobean manor that's been standing here since the 1600s, and the gardens alone justify the trip if you're staying nearby.

What you get here is a working estate rather than a theme park version of history. The house itself tells the story of a family's wealth and taste across several centuries - you can walk through rooms that feel genuinely lived-in, not museum-sterile. The grounds are genuinely lovely for a wander, especially if you've got kids who'll happily disappear into the parkland for an hour or so.

The nearest proper town is Hereford, about twenty minutes south, which means Holme Lacy works perfectly as a peaceful half-day if you're based at Broadmeadow Glamping just down the road. That five-mile distance makes it an easy morning visit before heading into town for lunch.

Bear in mind this isn't a major heritage site with crowds or gift shops - it's more intimate than that. Opening hours and admission aren't always straightforward, so ring ahead before you drive out. It's worth doing though, especially if you're the sort who prefers real houses to polished attractions. Walkers will appreciate the grounds, and anyone interested in how the gentry actually lived will find plenty to occupy a couple of hours.
