West Wood

The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and the air smells properly alive - damp earth and pine resin mixing together. West Wood, just outside Hereford, is a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured nature reserve, with plenty of paths winding through deciduous and conifer mix. You get decent shade cover and some sections feel genuinely remote despite being so close to town.

It's ideal for walkers who want something low-key and honest. There are no visitor facilities to speak of, no café, no gift shop - just trees and paths. That makes it either brilliant or a bit disappointing depending on what you're after. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after forty minutes, but teenagers and actual hikers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the genuine woodland feel.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the main loop properly, though you can dip in and out for shorter stretches. There's no entry fee that I'm aware of - it's free public access, which is always welcome. Spring is cracking here when the bluebells come through, though honestly it works year-round.

If you're staying at Tresseck Campsite or Broadmeadow Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading into Hereford. It pairs well with exploring the cathedral or the cider culture - gives you that natural break without venturing far from your accommodation.
