Ardgay

The A9 barely pauses here, most drivers racing north to the Highlands proper without realising they've just passed through one of Scotland's most understated corners. Yet Ardgay sits at a fascinating crossroads where the Dornoch Firth meets rolling hills dotted with ancient brochs and forgotten industrial ruins.

Dun Alascaig offers some of the best-preserved Iron Age stonework in the region, while the skeletal remains of Spinningdale Cotton Mill tell a different story entirely - of 19th-century ambition that ultimately crumbled. Both are proper walks from the village centre, but well worth the effort for anyone interested in Scotland's layered past.

Carbisdale Castle dominates the landscape from its hilltop perch, though it's the smaller archaeological sites like Carn Mor that often prove more rewarding. The countryside here rolls between dense woodland at Gearrchoille Community Wood and the mirror-still waters of Loch Buidhe, where red deer often come down to drink at dusk.

Invershin lies just upstream, accessible via the old bridge that carries its own slice of engineering history. The Royal Navy Memorial Bell and various monuments around Bonar Bridge speak to the area's military connections, though it's the quieter spots like St Devenic's Old Church that capture the true spirit of this ancient landscape.

Travellers heading this far north will find Ardgay makes excellent sense as a base. It's close enough to Dornoch's championship golf course yet far enough from the crowds to feel genuinely remote. The train stops here too - a proper bonus when petrol stations become scarce further north.
