Carn Bhrain

The walk up Carn Bhrain from Ardgay is one of those proper hill climbs that rewards you without asking too much of your legs. You're looking at a modest Corbett - just shy of 2,500 feet - that rises above the Strath of the Shin and treats you to views across the central Highlands that justify the effort.

It's a straightforward push once you've found the start near Ardgay itself. The path isn't manicured, but it's well-trodden enough not to feel sketchy, and the grind is steady rather than punishing. What gets you is the panorama when you crest it: Ben Loyal lies off to the north, the Shin Valley rolls out below, and if the weather's on your side you can pick out mountains well beyond the immediate district.

Walkers will find this a decent couple of hours' work - allow three hours up and down if you're taking it steady and stopping for the views, which you absolutely should. It's not the sort of peak that dominates your week, but it's genuinely worth the detour if you're camping at Ardgay Glamping or exploring this corner of Sutherland. Families with confident hill-walkers will manage it fine; younger legs might find it a slog.

Go in decent weather - the cloud can roll in fast up here - and bring a proper layer. It's free, obviously, and you can do it any time the ground's not waterlogged.
