About Carbisdale Castle

You'll spot Carbisdale Castle long before you reach it - a Victorian Gothic pile rising dramatically above the River Shin, about three miles south of Ardgay. Built in 1897 by the Dowager Countess of Sutherland (who had money to burn and a grudge against her stepson), it's one of Scotland's more melodramatic castles, all turrets and pinnacles and architectural spite.

Inside, you're walking through what's now a youth hostel, which is brilliant if you're after budget accommodation but a bit odd if you just want to have a look. The castle itself is open to hostel guests primarily, though you can sometimes wander the grounds and peer at the architecture from outside. The riverside location is genuinely lovely - proper dramatic Highland scenery without needing to trek into the Cairngorms.

Historically minded visitors will get a kick out of the spite-driven story behind its construction. Kids won't find much to do beyond running about outside and maybe spotting the river below. It's not really a destination in itself unless you're staying at the hostel or combining it with walks along the Shin.

If you're based at Ardgay Glamping nearby, it's an easy drive or a decent walk if you fancy stretching your legs. The castle works best as part of a broader Highlands itinerary rather than a standalone visit. The exterior is striking enough to photograph, and the grounds are free to wander, but don't expect castle tours or tea rooms.
