Withins Height

Standing at 1,308 feet, Withins Height commands the moors above Hebden Bridge like something from a Brontë novel - which, given where you are, feels oddly fitting. The walk up is what matters here rather than any structure at the top; there's no visitors' centre or café, just moorland, sky, and views that stretch across Lancashire and into Yorkshire on a clear day.

The approach from Heptonstall or Slack Bottom is well-trodden, taking you through proper Pennine landscape - heather, stone walls, wind that doesn't quit. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and whether you stop to catch your breath. It's free, naturally, and open whenever you fancy it.

This appeals to serious walkers more than casual strollers. If your family expects a destination with facilities, you'll be disappointed. But if you're staying at one of the local campsites - Shay Gate Farm is closest at under six miles - and you want a proper moorland hike without the tourist crowds, this delivers. The Bronte Country Park over in Yorkshire makes a good pairing if you're doing a longer holiday in the area; both tap into the same wild-moor atmosphere that defines this region.

Go on a day with decent visibility. Otherwise you're paying good slog money for grey views and damp socks.
