Lumb Falls

The walk to Lumb Falls takes you through proper Pennine moorland, and the falls themselves are worth the effort if you're based anywhere near Hebden Bridge. They're not dramatic in the way Scottish waterfalls can be, but there's something satisfying about finding them tucked into the valley - a decent cascade that's particularly good after rain when the water's actually moving with some purpose.

You'll need sturdy boots and an hour or so to get there and back from Hebden Bridge itself. The path climbs steadily through woodland, which is lovely in spring and autumn, though it can be boggy underfoot even when it hasn't rained recently. The falls work best as part of a wider moorland walk rather than a destination in themselves - most people combine it with a loop through the surrounding countryside.

This is ideal for walkers and anyone who wants a proper stretch of the legs. If your kids are the type who'll complain about muddy paths within ten minutes, you'll want to find something else. Families with older children and a bit of stamina will get on fine.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Old Chamber Camping is closest at three miles away - and you've got a solid day's walking right on your doorstep. The area around Hebden Bridge is brilliant for this kind of thing, and Lumb Falls fits neatly into it without feeling like you're ticking off a must-do.
