Top Withins

The ruins of Top Withins sit on the moors above Hebden Bridge like a stubborn reminder that someone lived out here, alone, generations ago. It's a moorland walk of about 40 minutes from Hebden Bridge town centre - steep enough to make you work for it, but nothing that'll defeat you. The farmhouse itself is little more than stone walls now, roofless and weathered, but that's precisely why people trek out here. This is the building that inspired Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, or so the theory goes. Whether she actually set foot on this exact spot remains contested by scholars, but the legend sticks, and you'll understand why once you're standing there looking across the Pennines. The wind tears through what's left of the structure. The views are genuinely proper - moorland stretching away in all directions, not a soul around on a weekday. It's free to visit, obviously, since there's nothing to charge at. Allow a solid hour and a half for the walk plus time at the site itself. The terrain is rough underfoot and gets boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Families with young kids might find the walk a bit long, but keen walkers and anyone with a literary bent will get something out of the pilgrimage. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Upwood, Trawden Forest Glamping, or Shay Gate Farm - it makes a proper morning expedition before heading into Hebden Bridge for lunch. Winter visits are bleak and atmospheric; summer brings the crowds.
