Top Withens

The walk up to Top Withens is the thing, not the destination itself. What you find at the end is the crumbling ruin of a farmhouse on the Pennine moors above Hebden Bridge, and yes, it's the one that inspired Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights - though frankly the connection feels thin when you're actually standing there in the wind.

It takes about ninety minutes to hike up from Hebden Bridge, following the Pennine Way through proper moorland. The path is reasonably well-trodden and marked, though muddy boots are essential. Once you reach the ruins - really just stone foundations and a bit of walling - the views across the valley are genuinely first-rate. On a clear day you can see for miles across the Calderdale landscape.

Literature enthusiasts will make the pilgrimage regardless. Walkers will find it a solid morning's exercise with decent scenery. Families with young kids might struggle with the steep sections and lack of facilities - there's nothing up there, so pack water and snacks. The moors can feel exposed and weather turns quickly, so check conditions before you head out.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Upwood or Bronte Country Park, it's absolutely worth tackling. Combine it with Hebden Bridge itself - a lovely market town with cafés and pubs - and you've got a proper day sorted. The ruin itself won't hold your attention long, but the moorland walk and the effort of getting there makes it worthwhile.
