Withens Clough Reservoir

The walk to Withens Clough Reservoir takes you up and over moorland that feels properly remote, even though Hebden Bridge sits just a couple of miles below. You're climbing through rough grass and heather, crossing streams that vary wildly depending on rainfall, until suddenly the water appears - a dark reservoir set into the hills with barely another person in sight.

It's not a destination in itself, more a reason to be out here. The walk appeals to anyone who enjoys moorland rambling rather than manicured parks - families with older kids will manage the terrain fine, but it's not a casual stroll. You're looking at a good couple of hours round trip from Hebden Bridge, possibly longer if the paths are boggy.

What makes it worthwhile is the isolation. There's something about standing by this water with the moors rolling out in every direction that makes the hike feel earned. The views back towards Calderdale are genuinely good, especially on clearer days. Summer's the obvious choice, but autumn gets you better light and fewer midges.

If you're staying at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping nearby, this becomes an excellent half-day walk that doesn't require a car. It fits properly into a walking holiday in the area rather than being a tick-box stop. The reservoir itself has no facilities - bring water and weather-appropriate kit. Locals go here regularly; tourists less so. That's rather the appeal.
