Well Hill

Well Hill rises from the moorland north of Skipton as a proper little peak with views that stretch across the Yorkshire Dales when the weather cooperates. It's not a dramatic climb - we're talking a few hundred metres of elevation - but the walk up from the nearby valleys is straightforward enough for most people without being trivial.

What you get at the top is a 360-degree panorama of moorland and distant fells. The Pennines roll away to the east, and on clear days you can pick out landmarks across the region. The access is unrestricted, and there's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of - this is proper fell walking, not a visitor attraction with car parks and cafes.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. Families with older children keen on fresh air and open ground will do fine too, though younger kids might find the plateau a bit austere. The moorland has that windswept, exposed character that appeals to people who like their landscapes raw rather than manicured.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Howgill Lodge is closest at just over 3 miles - Well Hill makes a natural half-day outing. Pair it with the Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite as a base and you're within easy reach of proper walking country. The climb takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on where you start, and you'd want two to three hours total if you're not rushing. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds push onto the moors, and winter weather can close in fast.
