Turn Edge

The walk up to Turn Edge rewards you with proper views across the Peak District - the sort of panorama that makes you understand why people keep coming back to this corner of Cheshire. It's a straightforward pull from Buxton, taking you to a rocky outcrop where the landscape opens up suddenly. On a clear day you can pick out ridge lines stretching for miles. The rocks themselves are worth the scramble, particularly if you enjoy that bit of low-level rock hopping without needing ropes or serious climbing skill.

This is the kind of spot that suits walkers far more than anyone else. Families with younger kids might find the approach a touch steep, and there's not much to do once you're up there except admire the view and eat a sandwich. If you're the type who likes to bag peaks and tick off walks, though, Turn Edge fits nicely into a longer circuit. The nearest accommodation is Peak Glamping Hideaway at just 2.4 miles, with Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite close by at 3.6 miles - both sensible bases if you're planning a few days of peak bagging in the area.

Allow an hour or so for the walk depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. It's free to visit, no facilities on site, and there's no real reason to come in bad weather when the view vanishes completely. Spring and autumn tend to offer the clearest conditions. Don't expect crowds or crowds, which is part of its charm.
