About Thirkelow Rocks
The rocks themselves are worth the effort. They jut out suddenly from the moor, and once you're up there the landscape spreads out in every direction - moorland, valleys, distant ridgelines. On a clear day you can stand among the weathered stone and actually feel like you've earned the vista. The scrambling around the top is light touch and safe enough for anyone with decent boots and a head for heights.
It's a solid morning walk for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with the climb itself. Walkers will get plenty from it, especially if you loop it into a longer hike of the surrounding moorland. The nearest towns - Buxton is closest - have cafes for a post-walk coffee, which you'll want after the ascent.
If you're based at Peak Glamping Hideaway or one of the caravan parks strung around Buxton (Lime Tree or Longnor Wood are reasonably close), this makes a proper day out without needing the car again. An hour up, thirty minutes messing about on top, hour down. Go when the weather's decent - moorland fog renders the views pointless.
