Tinker Cross

You'll find Tinker Cross standing on the moors above Hebden Bridge, a weathered stone marker that's been catching walkers' eyes for centuries. It's one of those proper old boundary stones - the sort that marks where parishes meet - and though it doesn't shout for attention, there's something rather satisfying about spotting it on the hillside.

The cross itself is modest. You're not looking at an elaborate monument here, just a functional piece of medieval infrastructure that's somehow survived. What makes it worth the detour is the walk. You're up on open moorland with views stretching across the South Pennines, and reaching it means you've got a decent leg-stretch through proper walking country.

Walkers will get the most from this one - it's not a sit-down kind of attraction, and children will need to be up for a hike to make it worthwhile. History enthusiasts might find the boundary stone angle interesting, but don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation boards. It's austere, which is rather the point.

If you're camping at Old Chamber just a mile away or at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, you could easily work this into a moorland walk without making it your whole day. The nearest proper town, Hebden Bridge, sits down in the valley - a useful base for supplies and somewhere to retreat to when the weather turns. Allow two to three hours for a leisurely walk out and back. There's no charge; it's just there, as it has been for rather a long time.
