Stubley Cross Hill

The walk up Stubley Cross Hill from Hebden Bridge rewards you with proper views across the Calderdale Valley - moorland stretching in all directions, stone walls criss-crossing the hillside, and on clear days the Pennines rolling away into the distance. It's not a massive peak, but that's rather the point. Most people tackle it as part of a longer moorland circuit rather than a standalone trek, and honestly, that works best.

The climb takes about forty minutes from the town and it's steep enough to justify a rest at the top, though not so brutal that walkers of moderate fitness will struggle. You'll pass through farmland initially, then onto proper open moorland - the kind of landscape that makes the South Pennines so compelling. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push a bit much. There's nothing up here in terms of facilities or interpretation, so bring water and dress for the weather - exposure can be noticeable when the wind picks up.

What makes this spot worthwhile is its integration with the wider walking network around Hebden Bridge. Both Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Old Chamber Camping are excellent bases, and from either site you can string together several moorland walks without repeating yourself. Stubley Cross Hill works as a morning objective before wandering back down through Colden Valley. It's not Instagram-famous and you'll rarely feel crowded, which is refreshing.
