Standing Stone Hill

The walk up Standing Stone Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Pennine moorland - proper windswept, exhilarating stuff. It's a modest peak by any standard, but that's rather the point. The hill sits within easy reach of Hebden Bridge, that bohemian little market town that's become something of a magnet for walkers and artists alike.

Getting up there takes about forty minutes from the road, depending on fitness and which path you take. The moorland ground is bog in places - waterproof boots aren't optional, they're essential. Once you're up, the standing stone itself is a Bronze Age marker, weathered smooth by centuries. Not massive, but compelling in the way these ancient stones are. You find yourself standing where people stood thousands of years ago, which does something to you.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with confident hikers will manage it fine, though younger children might find the exposed terrain a bit bleak on a grey day. The views reward the effort on clear days; in mist, frankly, you're up there for the principle of it.

Trawden Forest Glamping, slightly further north, puts you closer to the Pennine Way if you're planning something more ambitious. Allow three hours return, including time to catch your breath and admire what you've climbed for.
