Middle Hill

The walk up Middle Hill from Skipton isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. The summit sits at 1,325 feet, and the real appeal is the view back across the Aire Valley and towards the higher Pennine ridges - proper sweeping stuff on a clear day. It's not a destination that'll take hours. You're looking at a round trip of maybe ninety minutes to two hours depending on your pace and whether you linger at the top. Walkers heading through the area will find it a worthwhile detour, especially if you're already staying at one of the nearby campsites like Philpin Farm or Catgill Farm - both are within three miles. Families with young kids might find the gradient a bit much, but teenagers who don't mind a proper climb will enjoy it. The paths are generally well-trodden and obvious, even if muddy patches crop up after rain. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no toilets - so bring water and come prepared. The best light is morning or early afternoon, and weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends. It works well as a warm-up walk before tackling longer routes in the Dales, or as a standalone outing if you're based in Skipton for a few days. Not everyone needs to add it to their itinerary, but if you're already in the area and fancy a proper viewpoint without committing to eight hours on a fell, it does the job.
