Llyn Isaf

The water at Llyn Isaf sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the Ceredigion hills like dark glass. It's a proper working reservoir rather than a tourist attraction dressed up as one, which is exactly why it's worth the drive inland from Aberystwyth.

This is walking country. The lake itself is accessible enough - you can reach the waterside without technical kit - but the real appeal lies in the footpaths that circle it. Expect moorland views, the occasional red kite wheeling overhead, and the kind of peace that makes you realise how much noise you normally live with. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a full lap; less if you just want a short stroll and a cuppa from a thermos.

History types will appreciate that this valley has been shaped by water management for generations. Hikers and dog walkers absolutely thrive here. Families with young kids might find it a touch remote - there are no facilities at the lake itself, and the walks demand reasonable fitness. That said, older children who enjoy getting muddy and spotting wildlife will have the time of their lives.

The lake is free to access and there are no set hours. Go early in the day if you want solitude, or in autumn when the light turns golden and the water temperature finally stops being brain-freezing. It's only forty minutes or so from Woodlands Caravan Park, making it a natural day trip for anyone staying at the nearby holiday parks dotted around Aberystwyth. Bring proper boots.
