Light Hazzles Reservoir

You'll find Light Hazzles Reservoir tucked into the moorland above Hebden Bridge, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of legwork. The walk in isn't trivial - expect a proper climb from the valley floor - but the payoff is a substantial body of water ringed by open Pennine moorland that feels genuinely remote, even though it's minutes from a proper town.

What you get here is walking, mostly. The reservoir has a dam you can cross, and the surrounding paths offer decent moorland rambling with views stretching across West Yorkshire on clear days. The water itself is dark and rather moody; don't expect lakeside cafes or amenities. Bring a thermos and a packed lunch if you're settling in for an afternoon.

It suits walkers and anyone after a bit of solitude more than families wanting a quick destination. The moorland terrain can be boggy, especially after rain, so proper footwear matters. There's no admission charge that we know of - it's open access land - but facilities are minimal. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent circuit rather than just popping over the dam.

Stay at either Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, both well-rated and close by, and you can tackle this as a morning walk before exploring Hebden Bridge itself in the afternoon. It's not spectacular enough to justify a trip on its own, but paired with the surrounding moorland and the town's cafes, it works well as part of a proper walking break.
