Hafod Mansion

The ruins of Hafod Mansion sit in a remote valley south of Aberystwyth, and they're genuinely worth seeking out if you're into 18th-century follies and architectural ambition gone slightly mad. Built by Thomas Johnes in the 1780s as his romantic country retreat, the place was meant to be a masterpiece - all neoclassical elegance overlooking the Ystwyth River. What you find now are the atmospheric remains of what was once quite grand: columns, archways, and enough dressed stone to tell you this fellow had serious money and even more serious taste in landscape design.

The setting does half the work for you. The surrounding woodland and the river gorge create genuine drama, and the walk in rewards you with that satisfying sense of discovery. History buffs will appreciate the ambition of the project and Johnes's role in the Welsh Romantic movement. Walkers get a proper trek through decent scenery - it's not a quick stroll. Families with older kids who aren't phased by ruins and mud will have a good time here, though toddlers might find the approach tedious.

Access appears to be free and open, though the site is unmanned so go equipped with decent footwear and a head for terrain. Allow a couple of hours return from Aberystwyth. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Brynllwyd Glamping or Woodlands Caravan Park, it makes a good half-day outing that feels properly off the beaten track.
