Green Withens Reservoir

The walk to Green Withens Reservoir takes you through proper Pennine moorland, climbing steadily from Hebden Bridge up into the kind of landscape that makes Yorkshire walkers smug. It's an upland water supply - nothing fancy - but the setting is what counts here. You get there after forty minutes or so of steady tramping, and the reservoir sits cradled in the hills with views that stretch across the moors in every direction.

This is walkers' territory, not a destination for idle strolling. The approach demands decent boots and the walk isn't short, so families with small children will find it demanding. But if you've got teenagers with legs, or you're a proper hillwalker, it's absolutely worth the effort. The water reflects the moorland sky, and on a clear day you can see right across the Pennines. The isolation is the whole appeal - you won't find crowds here.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the reservoir itself, so bring what you need. The walk is free and open year-round, though winter can be grim on these heights. Allow two to three hours round trip depending on fitness.
