Great Hill

The walk up Great Hill from Hebden Bridge is steep enough to make your legs burn, but the payoff is proper worth it. You get views across the Calderdale valleys that stretch for miles - on a clear day you can pick out the moorland rolling away in every direction, with the town tucked down in the valley floor looking suddenly very small indeed.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a technical climb. Most people tackle it as an afternoon outing from Hebden Bridge town centre, following the footpaths up through the fields. Reckon on a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not rushing, longer if you want to sit at the top with a thermos and properly soak it in. The higher you go, the more the industrial architecture of the valley reveals itself - mill chimneys, old stone walls, everything fitting into the landscape like it's been there forever.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's the kind of walk that clears your head without demanding specialist kit or navigation skills. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the initial climb tedious. The moorland vegetation changes as you ascend, and in autumn the bracken turns a proper golden colour that photographs brilliantly.

If you're staying at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, both just outside town, Great Hill makes an excellent morning or evening leg-stretch. Weather-dependent, though - moorland can turn quickly, so pick a day when visibility is decent.
