Fagwr Fach

The ruins of Fagwr Fach sit quietly on the Ceredigion hillside, about four miles south of Aberystwyth - a modest stone structure that rewards walkers willing to leave the main roads. It's the remains of a medieval fortified farmhouse, though calling it grand would be overselling it. What you get is weathered stonework, partial walls, and the sense of how people actually lived here centuries ago, rather than the Disney version of medieval life you find at bigger heritage sites.

Historians and walkers get the most from Fagwr Fach. The setting matters as much as the building itself - you're looking at how someone chose this particular slope, this particular vantage point, and defended it. It's a proper thinking-person's site, not somewhere you'll spend two hours queuing or following a scripted tour.

There's no visitor centre, no admission fee, no opening hours to speak of. You park nearby and walk in - allow 30 to 45 minutes round trip depending on fitness and weather. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth the effort.

If you're staying at Woodlands Caravan Park or Brynllwyd Glamping, both just under five miles away, Fagwr Fach makes a proper morning walk. It slots well into a broader day exploring the Ceredigion coast and uplands. Not essential, but if you like history that doesn't shout about itself, and you don't mind a bit of navigation, it's genuinely worth the detour from Aberystwyth.
