Domen Milwyn

The walk up Domen Milwyn rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay and inland toward the Cambrians. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a gentle hill with archaeological significance - but that's rather the point. This Iron Age fort sits about 300 metres up, and you can still make out the defensive earthworks if you know where to look.

Getting there from Aberystwyth takes the best part of an hour on foot, depending on which route you pick. The ground's boggy in places, especially after rain, so decent boots aren't optional. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slowly and want to potter about at the top.

History enthusiasts will find more to chew on than casual walkers. The earthworks themselves are fairly subtle - you're reading the landscape rather than gawping at dramatic ruins - so it helps if you know what you're looking for. Families with young kids might find the walk itself more engaging than the destination, though the views are genuine compensation.

You can string this together nicely with other walks in the area. The Woodlands Caravan Park sits just five miles away, and Brynllwyd Glamping's similarly close if you want somewhere with a bit more comfort. Both are solid bases for exploring the Ceredigion hills without straying too far from coast access.

Free to visit, obviously. No facilities up there, so bring water. Best tackled on a clear day when the bay views actually justify the muddy boots.
