Coed Hafod

The walk through Coed Hafod takes you into proper old-growth woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being barely twenty minutes from Aberystwyth. Ancient oaks and beeches tower overhead, creating the kind of dappled shade that makes August heat actually bearable. The forest floor is soft with moss and leaf litter - good boots recommended after rain, as it gets slick.

This is a place for people who actually want to walk, not just amble between car parks and gift shops. The trails wind deeper into the woods without signs screaming at you, which is refreshing. On a quiet weekday you might not see another soul for hours. Kids will find it properly exciting if they're the type to enjoy building dens and spotting wildlife rather than expecting entertainment laid on.

Coed Hafod works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon stop when you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Brynllwyd is closest at just over two miles away, or Woodlands Caravan Park if you prefer a more traditional setup. Allow two to three hours if you want to explore properly rather than just do a quick circuit. The forest is free to access and there's parking available, though it can get busy on bank holidays.

Worth the trip if you're staying locally for a week. As a one-off detour from Aberystwyth town centre, perhaps less essential - but if woodland walks are your thing, this one stands above the usual managed forest offerings.
