Chwarel Bach

The walk up Chwarel Bach rewards you with views across Cardigan Bay that justify the climb. It's not a massive peak - the Welsh hills rarely are - but the effort of getting to the top feels earned when you're standing there looking out towards Aberystwyth and the coast beyond.

What you're climbing is essentially a working slate quarry turned walkers' route, which gives it character. The path is steep in places and a bit rough underfoot, but nothing technical. Most people manage it in under an hour round trip, though you'll want longer if you actually plan to sit and take in the view rather than just tick it off.

It works best for walkers who like a proper graft for their reward. Kids can manage it if they're reasonably steady on their feet, though younger ones might find the loose ground frustrating. History types will get something from the industrial heritage angle - the quarry workings are still visible if you know what to look for.

Timing-wise, go early morning if you can, before the afternoon clouds roll in from the sea. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and a snack.
