Bryn Mawr

The walk up Bryn Mawr from Aberystwyth is a proper lung-buster, but the payoff makes it worth every gasping step. You're climbing one of the Cambrian Mountains' more accessible peaks - nothing too technical, just relentless gradient through moorland that gets increasingly wild the higher you go. On a clear day, which isn't guaranteed in West Wales, you'll see right across to Cardigan Bay and back inland toward the Plynlimon range. The views are genuinely striking rather than fancy-postcard pretty, which somehow feels more honest.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the steepness. Walkers after a proper workout without needing technical gear should slot it right into their itinerary. You're looking at a couple of hours up and down if you're not hanging about, longer if you want to sit with a thermos and actually absorb where you are. There's no café at the top, no visitor infrastructure - it's just you, the wind, and a lot of space.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Cambrian Mountains Glamping or Woodlands Caravan Park are both within striking distance - Bryn Mawr works brilliantly as a morning mission before settling in elsewhere for the afternoon. It's the kind of walk that clears your head without demanding anything fancy in return. Worth doing, though probably not worth planning a whole trip around unless you're already hiking the Cambrians properly.
