Blackstone Edge Reservoir

The walk up to Blackstone Edge Reservoir from Hebden Bridge rewards you with proper Pennine moorland and a body of water that feels genuinely remote despite being so close to civilisation. It's about three miles on foot from the nearest car park, climbing steadily through heather and gritstone, which means most casual visitors turn back before reaching it - and that's rather the point. The reservoir itself sits at 1,400 feet, grey-blue and windswept, with moorland stretching in all directions and barely another soul around.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young children will struggle with the climb and might find the bleak, exposed terrain a bit much. But if you've got teenagers or you're a proper hiker looking for something less touristy than Pendle Hill, this delivers. The views back across the valley towards Hebden Bridge are excellent, and on a clear day you can see right across to Lancashire.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip. Go in summer or early autumn when the weather's stable - winter and spring can be grim up there, with cloud rolling in fast. It's free to walk, and there's parking nearby if you know where to look.

If you're staying at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, this makes a solid half-day outing. It's a different experience from the easier park walks - less Instagram, more honest moorland graft.
