Banc Llety'r Asynnod

The walk up Banc Llety'r Asynnod isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not prepared. This small peak sits just outside Aberystwyth, making it an ideal afternoon escape when the weather's playing ball. From the top, you get proper views across Cardigan Bay - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the huff and puff getting there.

It's not a dramatic mountain. You won't find dramatic mountains in Ceredigion, to be honest. But what you get is that satisfying sense of reaching somewhere proper, with bracken underfoot and the coast sprawling out below. Allow an hour or so for the round trip, depending on fitness. There are no facilities up there, so take water.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for sitting about - you come, you climb, you enjoy the view, you head back down. Families with younger children might find it a bit of a slog, but teenagers and keen walkers will crack on fine. The local caravan parks and glamping sites scattered around Aberystwyth - places like Brynllwyd Glamping and Woodlands Caravan Park - make good bases for exploring the area's walking routes. Banc Llety'r Asynnod fits nicely into a wider ramble around the hills above town. Go midweek if you can; weekends get busier than you'd expect for something so modest.
