Coed Rheidol National Nature Reserve

The Rheidol Valley cuts through mid-Wales like a green wound, and Coed Rheidol National Nature Reserve is where you actually get to walk into it. This isn't some manicured visitor attraction - it's proper woodland that feels genuinely wild, even though you're only a couple of miles from Aberystwyth.

The reserve follows the river through dense oak and birch forest, with trails that range from gentle riverside strolls to steeper climbs into the canopy. On a good day, the light filtering through the leaves is genuinely lovely. You'll spot wood warblers, pied flycatchers, and if you're lucky, red squirrels darting between the trees. The geological story is interesting too - the valley was carved by glaciers, and you can read it in the rock faces.

It's the sort of place where walkers absolutely get their money's worth. Families with older kids will enjoy the trails, though the steeper sections aren't pushchair-friendly. Ornithologists should time a visit for spring migration. You could easily spend two to three hours here without rushing.

The reserve sits just outside Aberystwyth, making it a natural pairing with a caravan holiday at one of the nearby parks - Woodlands or Brynllwyd are within spitting distance. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want to avoid the crowds and maximise your chances of spotting wildlife. Spring and early summer are peak times, but honestly, autumn's when the light's best.
