Fron Goch Pool

A shallow reservoir tucked into the hills just outside Aberystwyth, Fron Goch Pool is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. The water itself is unremarkable - murky, reed-fringed, nothing like the dramatic lake views you might find further north in Snowdonia. But that's rather the point.

This is a walker's spot, pure and simple. The footpath around the perimeter takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace, winding through rough grassland and past patches of gorse. The circuit is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the terrain a bit boggy underfoot when wet. Views open up occasionally across the water toward the surrounding moorland - proper wild country, this, with barely a house in sight.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's free to access and you can turn up whenever you fancy. Early morning is best if you want the place to yourself, and the light at dusk catches the water nicely. In winter, the pool can feel genuinely remote.

If you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Woodlands is closest at under two miles - it's a decent half-day outing to break up a rainy afternoon. Pair it with a walk into Aberystwyth itself, which has enough going on to warrant a proper visit. Fron Goch won't wow you, but it'll give you a genuine taste of West Wales without the crowds.
