Balass Strip

The Balass Strip is a woodland walk just outside Cupar that gives you proper forest air without needing to drive an hour into the Cairngorms. It's straightforward enough - a strip of decent tree cover where you can actually lose the sound of traffic, which is harder than you'd think this close to a market town.

You're looking at a gentle woodland stroll rather than anything dramatic. The paths are manageable, the trees do their job screening out the wider landscape, and there's enough shade to make it pleasant on a warm day. History buffs might find the location interesting given Fife's industrial past, though the forest itself won't reveal much beyond what you'd expect from any Scottish woodland.

Families with young kids will manage it fine for an hour or so, though they might not be gripped for much longer - it's not a destination where there's much to discover or climbing to be had. Walkers doing a longer Fife ramble could slot it in as a halfway break rather than a main event. The real advantage is proximity to Cupar, which means you're not burning fuel to get some trees around you.

There's no information on facilities or whether any bits require permission to access, so check locally before you go. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Clayton Caravan Park or Craigtoun Meadows, it's close enough for a quick leg-stretch rather than a proper outing. On balance, it's useful if you're in the area - just don't expect it to be the highlight of your Fife trip.
