The Provost

Standing stones don't get much more atmospheric than this Bronze Age circle, where four weathered megaliths rise from a field just outside Cupar. The Provost feels properly ancient - these stones have been marking this spot for around 4,000 years, and you can sense that weight of history when you're standing among them.

What strikes you first is how accessible it all feels. No visitor centre, no car park charges, just you and some of Scotland's oldest monuments in a working farm field. The stones aren't massive - the tallest reaches about eight feet - but there's something compelling about their simplicity.

History buffs will love the fact that this is one of Fife's best-preserved stone circles, while families might find it a bit limited unless paired with other local attractions. Twenty minutes is plenty to walk around and take photos, though the setting encourages you to linger.

Getting there requires a short walk across farmland, so proper footwear is essential. Best combined with a trip to nearby Cupar or as a quick stop if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Letham Feus or Clayton. The lack of facilities means it's very much a see-it-and-move-on attraction, but that's part of its appeal.
