Medieval walls still frame the high street where Norman knights once clattered through on horseback. Tonbridge wears its history lightly though - this isn't some stuffy museum piece but a proper working market town that's kept its soul intact. The River Medway cuts right through the heart of things, past the imposing castle ruins that dominate the skyline.

Wandsworth it isn't. Instead, you'll find independent shops tucked between ancient timber-framed buildings, while the twice-weekly market brings a bit of proper bustle to the town centre. The castle grounds make for a lovely afternoon stroll, particularly when the sun catches those weathered sandstone walls just right.

Venture beyond town and you're into prime Kent countryside within minutes. Hush Heath and Balfour Winery both produce cracking English wines - the latter's sparkling efforts have won awards, and both offer tastings that beat any chain wine bar. Between them lie ancient woodlands like Ladham Wood and Parsonage Wood, perfect for clearing your head after sampling the local vintages.

Furnace Pond provides decent fishing if that's your thing, though it's the surrounding area that really shines. This is High Weald country - rolling hills, hop gardens, and those distinctive oast houses dotting the landscape like oversized chess pieces.

Getting here's straightforward enough. Tonbridge sits bang on the main London-Hastings railway line, making it dead easy from the capital. The M25 and A21 put you within striking distance by car too.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Tanner Farm Park or Still Acres makes perfect sense. You're close enough for evening strolls into town, yet surrounded by countryside that feels properly rural. It's the best of both worlds really - market town amenities with genuine escape just outside your tent flap.
