Wimpey Field

There's a patch of open ground just outside Tonbridge that locals call Wimpey Field, though these days it's more likely to be hosting a car boot sale or community cricket match than anything else. It's the sort of unremarkable space that doesn't photograph well or make it into guidebooks, and that's partly the point. What you get is a proper stretch of Kent countryside - flat, accessible, and genuinely free of the tourist machinery.

Historically, this was significant wartime territory. During World War II, the Wimpey Bombers - Wellington bombers, technically - used the airfield here for operations, which is where the name comes from. If you're into that period of history, there's something quite moving about standing in a field and knowing what happened above it seventy-odd years ago. The physical remains are minimal though - you're not looking at runways or hangars. What you see is grass, trees, and the occasional bit of fencing.

It works best if you're cycling through the Medway Valley or already staying at one of the nearby parks - Still Acres or Tanner Farm are both close by and genuinely good for a night or two. Families with young kids probably won't find much to hold their attention for more than twenty minutes unless you're breaking up a longer walk. But if you're after a quiet spot to have a picnic or you want to understand a bit of local wartime history without the crowds, it's well worth the detour from Tonbridge.
