Saffron Walden

Medieval streets wind between timber-framed buildings that have watched centuries pass. Saffron Walden feels properly ancient - and it is, with its maze of narrow lanes and the remarkable earth maze at the common that's been puzzling visitors since the 17th century.

The market town sits in north-west Essex, surrounded by rolling countryside that's perfect for walking. Ancient woodlands dot the landscape - Lambsells Wood and Peverel's Wood are cracking spots for a ramble, while Little Grimsditch Wood offers quieter paths away from the crowds.

Don't miss Audley End House just outside town. This Jacobean mansion is one of England's finest country houses, with gardens that Capability Brown had a hand in designing. The nearby village of Thaxted, with its stunning guildhall and windmill, makes for a lovely afternoon out.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The nearest station is Newport, about four miles away, with regular trains to Cambridge and London Liverpool Street. Most visitors drive though - it's just off the M11 and parking in town is reasonable.

Staying at one of the local campsites or glamping sites gives you proper access to this corner of Essex. Gosfield Lake Resort offers lakeside pitches, while the various farm-based sites like Dairymeade Farm Glamping put you right in the countryside. From any of these bases, you can explore the network of bridleways and footpaths that criss-cross the area, or take day trips to Cambridge (20 minutes) or even London (under an hour by train).

The town itself rewards a slow wander. Independent shops line the streets around the market square, and there are some proper good pubs for lunch.
