Ellis Green Nature Reserve

A modest patch of woodland and grassland just outside Saffron Walden, Ellis Green Nature Reserve is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a pilgrimage to. But that's rather the point. It's genuinely wild in the way Essex reserves can be - a mix of scrub, wetland, and open ground that attracts birds and butterflies in decent numbers, especially spring through summer.

Walkers get the most from it. There's no tarmac, no café, no visitor centre - just trails threading through the undergrowth, proper quiet, the kind of place where you might actually hear something rather than just see it. Birdwatchers in particular will recognise it as serious territory. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling and scanning the trees. It's free to visit, no barriers, no fee.

If you're camped at Hidden Gem Glamping or Readers Field just down the road, this makes a lovely morning walk before breakfast or a sunset potter. The surrounding area has the usual Essex patchwork of farms and villages - Saffron Walden itself is close enough for lunch and proper medieval architecture if you want contrast. Hill Farm campsite is a touch further but still within easy striking distance.

Honestly, don't expect manicured paths or interpretive boards. What you get instead is genuine habitat - unglamorous, undermanaged in the Instagram sense, and all the better for it. Real naturalists will appreciate the wildness. Everyone else might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes.
