Brights Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss - proper springy underfoot after rain. Brights Wood is a modest patch of native broadleaf forest just east of Saffron Walden, the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed loop. Oak and ash dominate, with enough light filtering through to keep things interesting without feeling exposed. Walking the perimeter takes the better part of an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to examine fungi or listen for woodpeckers. There's genuine peace here, the kind you don't get in managed country estates. It's not dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoints - but that's rather the appeal. Families with young kids will find it manageable without being thrilling; older walkers and nature types get more out of the quiet observation side of things. Free access, no facilities that we could spot, so come prepared. Best visited autumn and spring when the wood feels alive without the summer heat making it claustrophobic.
